Book Festival: Marilyn Hassid Emerging Novelist

Join us in discussing David Biespiel’s A Self-Portrait in the Year of High Commission of Love in conversation with Marilyn Hassid.

Growing up in Houston, author David Biespiel was a fixture at the JCC. He returns to Book Festival with his debut novel, set in 1980s Houston.  It focuses on two friends, a charmed teen growing up in Jewish Meyerland and his gay best friend of Hispanic Gulfgate.  Headed for Galveston Beach, intent on not returning home, the two young men bond over their love of literature and Nolan Ryan’s success on the baseball field.  During their travels, they are faced with life-altering decisions and their consequences.
