For American women today, working out is accepted and expected, fueling a multibillion-dollar fitness industry. It wasn’t always this way. Seven decades ago, sweating was “unladylike” and girls grew up hiding their muscles and believing that physical exertion would cause their uterus to “fall out.” Thanks to a few forward-thinking pioneers, women began to move discovering the joy of exercise which allowed them to feel strong, supported and empowered.
