Born into a musical Jewish family, Alsop never relinquished her childhood dream of becoming a conductor inspired by her hero, Leonard Bernstein. Despite rejections from the classical music establishment, she smashed the glass ceiling serving as music director of orchestras in Baltimore, São Paulo and Vienna.
