Theatre Classes

Mini Thespians (PK3)

An introduction to the world of imaginative play. Children get comfortable with their bodies and voices through confidence-building and creative role-playing activities.

Creative Dramatics (PK4)

A beginner theater class for young students looking for a place to let their imagination run free. This class will focus on the creativity of storytelling and teach basic theater concepts and games.

Stage Kids is a wonderful introduction into the world of musical theatre. Students will take their storytelling skills to the next level as they learn new songs, follow simple movements, and find joyful ways to express themselves.

The Spotlight program allows aspiring performers to develop their skills in the three core areas of musical theatre – acting, singing and dancing. Every fall and spring semester, students will go through the audition and rehearsal process for a 30-40 minute musical theatre production.  Their hard work will culminate with a performance for family and friends on the Kaplan stage – allowing them the chance to work with simple costumes and sets as they bring their show to life!

Our flagship performing program, Centerstage offers students in 3-5 grades the opportunity to be a part of a large-scale musical production each fall and spring.

Students will go through a full production process – starting with auditions, casting, rehearsals, tech, and finally, performances. Throughout the rehearsal process, they will develop their singing skills, learn fun choreography and hone their acting skills.

Local designers and technical professionals are brought on to put together a fully-realized set, beautiful costumes, and innovative lighting and sound designs. Our trained staff creates a nurturing and positive environment where every child can shine, no matter their skill level or role size. There is no better place to perform than at the J!

Perfect for students who aren’t into singing and dancing, the Act Out program offers them an opportunity to rehearse and perform a non-musical play. Students will work on their core acting skills, and also spend time playing fun theatre and improv games with their peers. The semester will culminate in a fully-realized production on the Kaplan stage.

Second Stage Productions

For the show-ready student in middle school, the Second Stage program offers the opportunity to perform in a full-scale musical production each fall and spring. They will be able to take their training to the next level and tackle musical theatre scripts that speak to their age and interests.

Stagecraft Studio

In this hands-on class, students will learn all about the backstage world of theatre. Students will learn from working professionals in technical theatre, and work together to create the scenery, props, costumes, and lighting for our youth theatre productions.

For the show-ready teen in high school, the Mainstage program offers the opportunity to perform in a full-scale production each fall and spring. Students will fine tune their character-building and scene-study skills, and be challenged and inspired as actors. Children graduating out of the Mainstage program will be fully prepared to step into any college theatre program of their choice.
